Broadsword

By Marco Ramirez

Directed by Freddie Ashley

Originally produced at Actor’s Express , Atlanta, GA.

January 13, 2011 through February 12, 2011

About the Premiere Production:
Former members of the heavy metal band Broadsword reunite for a funeral. Richie, the band's former guitarist, has recently been declared dead after having been missing for six months. Tensions mount with the arrival of Richie's brother Tony, a would-be rock star, who abandoned the band for a brush with fame and fortune. A mysterious stranger arrives, spinning an outrageous story that just might hold the clue to Richie's disappearance. Will friendships be tested? Will the band rock on? Will there be a head-banging twist? Find out in this devilishly entertaining new play with a wry sense of humor and ass-kicking rock-and-roll.

Artistic Statement:
Broadsword is an audaciously ambitious play that blends familiar themes and ideas into something wholly original. The play is extremely polished and is the work of a young writer who is exceptionally in control of his craft. The nurturing of emerging artists is a chief cornerstone of AE’s priorities, as is offering audiences muscular theatergoing experiences. Broadsword is a daring and bold play that delivers on both fronts. It is profoundly moving, very funny and extremely entertaining. - Artistic Statement from Artistic Director Freddy Ashley

What this grant has allowed us to do:
We will be able to hold an additional week of rehearsal. As Marco’s work on the script is ongoing, this support will allow him more time to finalize the changes he has been making to the text. Having an additional week will afford us the time to test Marco’s ideas for the play and fold them into our preparation for the live event.
