About the Premiere Production

After Emanuel is murdered for his new pair of Air Jordans, his mother, Mary, rebuilds her life in the Bronzeville neighborhood she calls home. As fervent and poetic as a gospel hymn, this potent drama about faith, family and loss was inspired by true events.

Artistic Statement

Playwright Marcus Gardley says, "I'm utterly thrilled to be making my debut as a Playwright's Ensemble Member at Victory Gardens. The Gospel of Lovingkindness is giving me an opportunity to explore Bronzeville, a neighborhood with deep roots and rich culture. I can't wait to bring this story to life on one of Chicago's finest stages."

Director Chay Yew says "I'm most excited by the relevance and power of this play that speaks to the pressing issues of our city and nation. The 2013-14 Season represents an expansion of our programming at Victory Gardens. I am proud to welcome Chicago's newest addition, Ensemble Playwright Marcus Gardley."

Grant Statement

The Edgerton Award is allowing Victory Gardens two additional weeks of rehearsal. As a world premiere, The Gospel of Lovingkindness, presents unique opportunities and challenges as the playwright, director, creative team, and cast create together what will ultimately be presented onstage. All of these stakeholders must have input into the final work. The extra rehearsal time is allowing us to give this important piece time and room to breathe and grow organically.
