About the Premiere Production:

Synopsis: On the assignment of a lifetime, two reporters head for Florida at Christmastime, trying to land a final interview with aging Red Sox legend Ted Williams. One's a rookie; the other, a seasoned pro. And both will learn the inestimable value of teammates— on and off the field. A loving testament to the light that shines on long after the last pitch is thrown, and the holiday spirit that overcomes any distance.

Artistic Statement: To be able to spend extra rehearsal time on a world premiere is invaluable. Even more so when it’s a piece that has deep local connections. And we all know, if you’re doing a play about the people who attend your theatre - you better get it right. Steve Drukman’s play explores New England’s ties to its heroes, its love of baseball, how as a people we work for redemption and true relationship, and how a great story can really bring us all together.

Grant Statement: As MRT shifts our focus to emphasize new plays and world premieres, we find that the three-week rehearsal period can be restrictive for a new play to really evolve. With an additional week of rehearsal, the creative team will have more time to flesh out scenes, work on dramaturgy and even do intensive dialect work with a dialect coach. Our world premiere production of GOING TO SEE THE KID will be all the more rich and relevant for having more time to spend developing the piece, thanks to the Edgerton Foundation.
