Application
Application materials
Applications must be developed by you, the applicant, and submitted by the extended deadline of Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 11:59pm ET. Please note the time zone. The RLC23 Application Portal will require you to complete the application form and upload the following files:
- A bio or resume/CV of no more than 2 pages. This will help the selection panel to have a sense of your background and work experience. However, the program is looking for writers, not resumes.
- Two work samples (written and/or video) that demonstrate your approach, style and strengths. These samples could include published clips, online pieces, and/or a 250-word essay with your view of the current state of theatre. The selection panel is especially interested in hearing your unique perspective.
Application materials will not be accepted after the deadline and must be submitted via the RLC23 Application Portal. Incomplete applications may not advance to the selection panel for their consideration.
Recommendation
The application requires one recommendation that addresses why you are a strong candidate for the RLC program. The recommender should be familiar with your work. The recommendation must be submitted directly by the recommender, not you, via RLC23 Recommendation Portal by the extended deadline of Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 11:59pm ET. Please note the time zone.
You are responsible for sending your recommender (you can simply copy and paste) the instructions below and the link to the RLC23 Recommendation Portal. TCG will not send the link to your recommender on your behalf.
The RLC program acknowledges that there may be barriers. Applications are accepted online in English; however, alternatives are possible. Program staff can help you navigate challenges related to language and/or technology. To request accommodation or assistance, please contact Raksak Kongseng (she/they) at rkongseng@tcg.org, preferably two weeks before the application deadline.
Instructions for recommenders
Thank you for providing a recommendation for a candidate for the 2023 Rising Leaders of Color (RLC) Program focusing on journalists and critics. The program’s structure brings national recognition to a cohort of early-career leaders; creates a learning space for affinity and accountability; and expands their network of empowering relationships with peers and leaders across the country.
In addition to those currently working as writers, RLC encourages applicants who may not formally identify themselves as a journalist and/or critic, but who are committed to examining theatre-making; opening dialogue about the relevance of theatre in today’s cultural landscape; and who are interested in reinventing the definition of journalism and cultural criticism.
RLC acknowledges that leadership takes place throughout the theatre field and its related sectors and is not necessarily defined by a position or title. With that in mind, the program believes that journalists and critics have untapped potential to be leaders. Previous RLC cohorts have supported leaders working in all areas of the theatre field and this is the first RLC round to focus exclusively on journalists and critics.
Please share your overall assessment of the candidate and also describe at least one example in which you have experienced this candidate’s skills as a writer and their potential to become change agents impacting the theatre field in a significant way. You should also address your experience of the applicant’s maturity level and ability to adapt to change. It is possible that members of the selection panel will not be familiar with the applicant’s work — therefore, your assessment will carry considerable influence.
You can submit your recommendation in one of the following formats:
- An audio or video recording of no more than 5 minutes;
- A PDF letter of no more than 2 pages. Additional pages will not be forwarded to the panel; or
- A text submission of no more than 1,000 words.
Your recommendation must be submitted by you, not the applicant. Please submit your recommendation via the TCG Recommendation Portal by the extended deadline of Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 11:59pm ET. Please note the time zone.
