CARES and Community Care: A What Now Webinar

While many theatres have applied for SBA loans from the Paycheck Protection Program in the CARES Act, there is still a great deal of uncertainty on what happens now.  What other opportunities exist within the CARES Act and Families First Coronavirus Response Act? What labor laws should you be tracking amid rapid shifts in the employer/employee landscape? How do you care for your company and community during a time of furloughs and social distancing? And how can we as a field prepare for--and influence--future federal relief efforts? This ‘what now’ webinar will help us manage this crisis strategically, leading with care for our colleagues and communities.

Speakers include:

Laurie_Baskin_Headhsot.pngLaurie Baskin joined Theatre Communications Group (TCG) in 1997 and is director of Research, Policy & Collective Action. Ms. Baskin created and administers the Blue Star Theatres program, which fosters engagement between theatres and military families. In her responsibility for TCG’s research, she oversees the Fiscal, Salary & Education Surveys. She administers TCG’s Education Programs, including teleconferences & Special Report series. Her endeavors in theatre education over the last twenty years include conceiving and spearheading an assessment project, Building a National TEAM: Theatre Education Assessment Models. Ms. Baskin is TCG’s liaison to the Performing Arts Alliance. She directs advocacy efforts at the federal level on behalf of the professional, not-for-profit American theatre field. She regularly provides advocacy updates for TCG’s website, Action Alerts to the field, and provides witnesses and testimony for legislative hearings. Prior to joining TCG, Ms. Baskin served for 15 years as executive assistant to the Chairman of the NYS Council on the Arts, working for then-Chairman, Kitty Carlisle Hart. She attended Mount Holyoke College, earned her B.A. from Colgate University, and a degree in arts administration from Adelphi University.

tcg16_Adrian_Budhu_web.jpgAdrian Budhu is the Deputy Director & Chief Operating Officer, Theatre Communications Group. Adrian comes to TCG after five years at The Theater Offensive (TTO), an LGBTQ not-for-profit arts organization in Boston, MA. The strategies he implemented there have strengthened The Theater Offensive’s brand on a national scale, increased its profile in the community, broadened its support base, and built capacity and resources for its sustainability – retiring the organization’s debt, growing revenue from $0.5 million in 2011 to $1.3+ million in 2016, and building cash reserves. Other professional experience includes: GLBTQ Domestic Violence Project,, Metro Boston Newspaper, and John Hancock Financial. Adrian lives in New York City with his fiancé Chris, a surgical resident at Mt. Sinai Hospital, and Boston terrier named Jack. He’s an avid runner and completed numerous marathons fundraising over $200K to benefit LGBTQ youth, people with disabilities, people living with HIV/AIDS, homeless people, survivors of Hurricane Katrina, and victims of domestic abuse. Adrian has won numerous awards for his leadership and activism. His prior affiliations include: the Boston Cultural Change Network (committed to collective action for social justice through Arts & Culture), the Boston Creates Leadership Council, where he advised and helped shepherd Boston's cultural plan into implementation; TCG’s Board of Directors (from which he has since resigned); and Point Foundation’s National Board of Directors.

Alec_Duffy__c__Susan_Young.pngAlec Duffy, (founder/Co-Director of JACK), is a theater-maker with a passion for creating original work — mostly with his theater company Hoi Polloi — and interpreting older work in radical ways. As a director, he found an early home at the Incubator Arts Project, with work that included The less we talk, All Hands, and the OBIE-winning Three Pianos, a paean to Schubert co-created with Dave Malloy & Rick Burkhardt. In 2012, he started JACK (named after his grandfather) with Mimi Lien and several co-founders in an attempt to build a microcosm of an ideal city, with performance and conversation serving a larger political project of collective liberation.

Andrew_Kaplan.pngAndrew Kaplan is a Member of the Firm in the Corporate Services and Health Care and Life Sciences practices. He works primarily in the firm's Princeton office, where he serves as the Managing Shareholder. In addition to health care, hospitality, and other industries, Mr. Kaplan practices extensively in the real estate and secured lending fields.

He concentrates on labor relations providing advice and counsel to management on a wide variety of employment issues and representing employers in labor and employment litigation. His clients come from a wide range of industries, including health care and life sciences, health insurance, hospitality, trucking and warehousing, and theater.

Greg_Reiner.pngGreg Reiner joined the National Endowment for the Arts as the director of theater and musical theater starting in September 2015. Reiner manages NEA grantmaking in theater and musical theater and represents the agency to the field. Most recently, Reiner was executive director of Classic Stage Company in New York City, where he launched CSC’s Musical Theater Initiative, the organization’s largest fundraising campaign, and implemented new education programs such as a Teen Council and a Shakespeare scene and monologue competition. Prior to that, Reiner was founding executive director of Tectonic Theater Project in New York City, where he received a Tony nomination for Best Play as one of the producers of 33 Variations. At Tectonic, Reiner also designed and managed the simultaneous opening of The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later in 150 theaters in all 50 states, DC, and eight countries, on the same night, with livestreaming and social media outreach. Reiner has also served as managing director at The Actors’ Gang in Culver City, California, and at the Shakespeare Festival/LA.

Jeffrey_Ruzal.pngJeffrey H. Ruzal is a Member of the Firm in the Employment, Labor & Workforce Management practice, in the New York office of Epstein Becker Green. He leads the firm’s Hospitality service team and represents clients in such diverse industries as hospitality, financial services, retail, health care, and technology. In 2018, Mr. Ruzal was recommended in The Legal 500 United States, in the Workplace and Employment Counseling category.

Stephanie_Ybarra-3__1_.jpgStephanie Ybarra is an artistic producer currently serving as Artistic Director of Baltimore Center Stage. Most recently including seven years as Director of Special Artistic Projects for The Public Theater in New York, her career spans two decades and involves roles at Dallas Children's Theater, Dallas Theater Center, Yale Repertory Theater, Two River Theater Company, and Playwrights Realm. In 2016, Stephanie co-founded the Artists’ Anti-Racism Coalition, a grassroots effort to help the Off-Broadway community dismantle systems of exclusion and oppression. She holds an MFA from Yale School of Drama, and a deep belief in the power of the post-it note.
