About the Premiere Production

Being stuck in a dead-end town hasn't diminished the dreams of 16-year old Annie and her friends. But when they decide to create their own future by entering into a life-changing pact together, Annie begins to question what she really wants. With savage humor and gritty poetry, Kirsten Greenidge's new play explores the challenges of choosing between the safety of the life you know and the danger of the life you desire.

Artistic Statement

Milk Like Sugar provides a clear-eyed and humane portrayal of angry, desperate and all-too-human young women for whom life offers few options. It is a caustically funny, brutal, wrenching work that nevertheless presents a small balm of hope at the end. It is a relevant story that needs to be told. La Jolla Playhouse is convinced that this new play, inspired by present-day events, will not only resonate with audiences of various backgrounds, but will serve as our next major contribution to the American theatre repertoire.

Grant Statement

La Jolla Playhouse is honored to receive an Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award for the 2011 world premiere play Milk Like Sugar. This award will ensure that we are able to continue our tradition of producing groundbreaking new work, despite these trying economic times. More specifically, the generous funding from the Edgerton Foundation for one extra week of rehearsal time will guarantee that this new play is as strong as possible by opening night, setting it up for success far beyond its initial run.
