About the Premiere Production: This world premiere play by acclaimed actor Alan Alda delves into the life and romance of one of the most brilliant female scientists in history. Famous for her groundbreaking research in radioactivity, Curie was the only person ever to win two Nobel Prizes in multiple sciences, but not without a struggle. For all the answers that came to her in the lab, Curie’s life is peppered with questions of how to realize the passion she has for both knowledge and love. Celebrated but then rejected by the popular press as both a woman and scientist, Curie is left to define her place in society – and history – on her own terms.

Artistic Statement: The Geffen Playhouse is committed to developing new work that we hope will ultimately become a permanent contribution to the theater community, and Radiance: The Passion of Marie Curie is a prime example of this. Written by Alan Alda and directed by Daniel Sullivan, Radiance tells the inspiring story of Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie, but what drew us to this play most was the combination of having a historical figure who many of us know of, with a story that is more or less unknown. Alda’s personal enthusiasm for this subject -- which encompasses science, feminism, social progress and relationships – is contagious, and we’re proud to partner with him to develop this play that infuses a piece of history with new life.

Grant Statement: This generous grant will make it possible for the actors and creative team to add additional rehearsal time. This enables further development at a delicate point in the creative process, which helps to create the foundation on which a new play is built.
