About the Premiere Production

BlackTop Sky tells the story of Ida Peters, a young woman who dreams of a better life. On the brink of getting out of the projects, her secure relationship is suddenly rocked by an intriguing stranger. This play tackles the concepts of class and conflict, as well as love and seduction.

Artistic Statement

Cynthia Levin, Unicorn Theatre's Producing Artistic Director 

Christina Anderson grew up in Kansas City and BlackTop Sky is her first production here since leaving to attend college. She has a unique vision to contribute to the American Theatre. Her plays are lyrical, poetic and encompass a cutting edge, contemporary style. In searching for new plays that address disenfranchised communities, minority cultures and alternative classes of people, I find Christina’s work to be profoundly sensitive. As a young, professional playwright, she has a rare combination of literary technique and creative brilliance, offering us a glimpse of a world seldom seen on stage. She paints a picture in addition to writing a story. At times it is a silence which propels the story, a tender touch or an explosive confrontation.

Grant Statement

Cynthia Levin, Unicorn Theatre's Producing Artistic Director 

The Edgerton Foundation grant allowed us to expand the rehearsal time to 4 weeks. We were also able to bring Christina to Kansas City for the extra week and then again for the previews leading up to opening. It was crucial to have this additional time to work with her on the development of the script along with the actors, director and design team. Christina was included in every aspect of the process from start to finish, an invaluable experience for all of us.
