Dog and Pony is a world premiere musical comedy romance from the award-winning talents behind Jersey Boys, Peter and the Starcatcher, and Altar Boyz. Mags and Andy are a screenwriting team with a track record of hits and a professional relationship that’s firing on all cylinders. When Andy’s marriage hits the rocks, forever single Mags finds she wants something more. Will romance ruin their perfect relationship? A witty and irreverent look at what women want and whether men fit the bill… or don’t.

Artistic Statement

Dog and Pony is a beguiling and witty work of musical theater by Rick Elice and Michael Patrick Walker, major artists whose previous successes testify to the depth of their talent. The creators of this world premiere musical comedy romance are the award winning talents behind several of the most highly acclaimed theatrical works of the past few years: Jersey Boys, Peter and the Starcatcher and Alter Boyz. Between them, their work has already changed the face of the American theater, on Broadway, Off Broadway, and on regional stages around the country. With support from the Edgerton Foundation, The Old Globe can produce a high caliber production of Dog and Pony that will only extend their influence. Dog and Pony is a musical on an intimate scale--five actors playing eight roles, with a small band in the pit--and this in itself will make it of great interest to theaters of every size. But its freshness, enormous humor, and most of all the vein of empathy and compassion that courses beneath its witty surface, will make it a must-see for audiences and place it atop the reading pile of every Artistic Director. What makes the piece resonate artistically is that it's a musical comedy that asks an important question, meaningful on both a personal and universal level: in a culture in which it is increasingly difficult to strike a healthy balance between work and life, between the professional and the private, how can something as ephemeral and gossamer as romance possibly stand a chance?

Grant Statement

An Edgerton Foundation Award for New American Plays will allow the Globe to provide vital support to the creative team and performers during an extended two week period that will include an additional week of studio rehearsal, three additional technical rehearsals and three additional previews.
