About the World Premiere Production:

Synopsis: A priest is torn between two loves….Marcela and her Cuban-American family are struggling and Father Monroe offers them warmth and kindness. Generosity blossoms into love as the lines between vocation and passion begin to blur. Artistic Director Emily Mann and playwright Nilo Cruz reunite for the first time since the Pulitzer Prize-winning Anna in the Tropics with this lyrical and romantic new play.

Artistic Statement: "I believe this is one of Nilo’s strongest plays to date…Nilo’s signature poetic writing weaves an old-world sense of nostalgia and elegance into a decidedly modern environment, replete with timely and relevant issues ranging from homosexuality to America’s changing relationship with Cuba. I am confident that our audiences will respond enthusiastically to the characters, the issues, and the style of this play, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to introduce this beautiful new work to the field. " --Emily Mann

Grant Statement: Support from the Edgerton Foundation will allow McCarter to add one additional week of rehearsal time to our current rehearsal period. An extra week will provide Nilo with the invaluable opportunity to make and implement re-writes, resulting in the most polished version of this play possible.
