About the Premiere Production:

Synopsis: With her military contractor career firmly behind her, single mother Laura finally has her son front-and-center in her life. But when a reporter appears demanding answers to a covered-up, decade-old story from her time in Afghanistan, the murky events of a single night resurface, revealing untold truths and painful consequences. From the writer of the Tony Award-nominated play Match comes a world premiere that investigates the personal cost of war and what it means to survive.

Artistic Statement: We Are Among Us is a tautly paced drama that investigates the murky ramifications of America’s involvement in the Afghanistan,” states City Theatre Artistic Director, Marc Masterson. “Stephen is grappling with complex geopolitical issues ripped from today’s headlines in an uniquely human way. It’s about a son confronting his mother’s actions, a daughter finding her voice, and the web that connects our increasingly global society. Engaging the Pittsburgh community in conversation is at the heart of our work at City and we are excited to do just that by supporting Stephen, director Adrienne Campbell-Holt, and the entire production team in bringing to life this vital, thought-provoking new play.”

Grant Statement: “The Edgerton Foundation’s support of additional rehearsal time for a world premiere is transformative,” said James McNeel, Managing Director, “and their grants continue to help shape the field, City Theatre included. We are grateful to them for providing We Are Among Us this critical assistance which will help ensure a terrific first production for our Pittsburgh audiences by providing our artists the time they need to finesse and build this important new American play. The Edgerton award is entirely unique and incredibly important."
