Middle

Middle

By David Eldridge
Originally Produced at National Theatre, London, UK
April 27 - June 18, 2022

The new play from the writer of Beginning.

Every relationship reaches a crossroad some time.

As dawn breaks, Maggie is heating some milk and Gary wonders what she’s doing out of bed.

Maybe it’s time for an honest conversation – but how much honesty can this marriage take?

Following their five-star production of Beginning, which played sold-out runs at the National Theatre and in the West End, writer David Eldridge and director Polly Findlay reunite for this raw, touching and funny portrait of a 21st-century marriage.

Middle is the second of three plays by David Eldridge to explore love and relationships.

Artistic Statement: David Eldridge is one of our finest contemporary writers, whose play Beginning really captured the imagination of National Theatre audiences back in 2017. He returns to the National with Middle, continuing his unflinching and witty depiction of modern relationships. Middle is again directed by Polly Findlay, whose work is a masterclass in detail and realism - supported by Fly Davies’ exquisitely nuanced set. The real-time format offers an irresistible and absorbing insight into one couple’s marriage.-- Vicky Hawkins, Producer

Grant Statement: By supporting three shows in the National Theatre’s re-opening season – one in each of our theatres on London’s South Bank – the Edgerton Foundation has made an extraordinary commitment to our organisation and the artists who create work here.

As we began to emerge from the devastating effects of Covid, the support, faith and enthusiasm of the Foundation allowed us to plan with confidence. It enabled us to invest in developing the work of contemporary artists who are creating new plays that touch on topics as diverse as the rise of the far right, modern marriage and the assassination of Gandhi.

We are incredibly grateful for the Foundation’s friendship and feel very lucky to work alongside you. - Rufus Norris, Artistic Director
