The Balusters

The Balusters

by David Lindsay-Abaire
Originally produced at Manhattan Theatre Club

May 24, 2026 – May 24, 2026

Synopsis: The Vernon Point Neighborhood Association is a passionate bunch, whether squabbling over historically inaccurate porch railings or debating trash can protocol. Still, no one is prepared for the neighbor-versus-neighbor battle royale that ensues when a newcomer to the board suggests the unthinkable: installing a stop sign on the corner of the enclave’s prettiest block. Written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony winner, Manhattan Theatre Club veteran, and master of antics David Lindsay-Abaire and directed by Tony winner Kenny Leon, THE BALUSTERS is a raucous, wild ride through a small community with big feelings.

Artistic Statement: We are thrilled to welcome Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner David Lindsay-Abaire back to MTC for his seventh world premiere on our stages. David’s history with us began over 25 years ago, when we premiered Fuddy Meers off-Broadway. His brand-new play The Balusters is a portrait of ten diverse Neighborhood Association members grappling with hotly contested issues about embracing the present while honoring their history. Beneath the surface of David’s signature hilarity and wit lie deeper and universal questions about power struggles and wildly divergent visions for the communities people hope to build. - Lynne Meadow, Artistic Director

MTC is proud of its long history of producing world premieres on Broadway. We’re deeply grateful for the opportunity to give David Lindsay-Abaire, Kenny Leon, and the company of The Balusters an additional week to develop this play to its fullest, prior to sharing it with New York audiences. - Chris Jennings, Executive Director
