Eventide
By Eric Schmiedl from the novel by Kent Haruf
Directed by Kent Thompson
Originally produced at Denver Center Theatre Company, Denver, CO.
February 3,2010 through February 27, 2010
About the Premiere Production: Eric Schmiedl’s companion piece to his adaptation of Kent Haruf’s Plainsong finds the McPheron brothers getting older while their maturing “adopted” daughter Victoria navigates college, romance and motherhood. This is a family forged from necessity in rural Holt, Colorado, where everyone does what it takes to overcome loss, survive harsh winters and find that love is never out of reach.
Artistic Statement: At the heart of my artistic vision for DCTC is relevance – making our theatre a town hall of ideas and issues and an incubator for the best new American plays. I want us to create theatre that arouses strong feelings, spark new ideas, and provokes discussion, debate, and constructive dialogue among the many diverse communities of the Rocky Mountain region. This includes digging deep into the culture and history of Denver, Colorado, and the Rocky Mountains.
The world premiere production of Eventide will address all of those goals, building on our considerable success with the “prequel” production of Plainsong. Kent Haruf's novel is a bracing, humorous, unsentimental and moving evocation of life in a small town on the high plains of Eastern Colorado. Featuring more than 25 characters, the play explores a heart-rending journey of the loss of a loved one, the ensuing grief, and the process of moving on after great sadness – seen through the eyes of three unconventional but interconnected families. It is an emotionally engaging, thought-provoking work of authenticity and compassion that redefines the meaning of Family and Community in today’s world. - From Artistic Director Kent Thompson
