June 4-6, 2020
In the summer of 2020, TCG invites you to the southwest! Join us in Phoenix, Arizona, a beautiful contradiction in geographic terms: a sprawling metropolis situated in a near prehistoric landscape, and a desert with sparkling reservoirs of water preserved through extensive conservation efforts. Phoenix is a rapidly-growing capital city in the last of the 48 coterminous states to join the union in 1912, and currently the state with the largest percentage of Native tribal land. It is a city that, as it expands, must work to remain rooted in its history. Phoenix will provide unique inspiration for theatre makers to dig deeply into the core purpose of our work in today’s world, with the area’s attention to the equitable preservation of its natural resources, its complicated political identity, its focus on children and families through its supportive programs for young people, and its ongoing discord around the Arizona border with Mexico. Conversations of legacy, empathy, and justice abound, and the theatre community rises up with every challenge and opportunity.
From June 4-6, 2020, TCG will host nearly 1,000 theatre people at our 30th National Conference in “the Valley of the Sun” (and as all the locals will tell you: “Don’t worry! It’s a dry heat.”) During our time together, we will engage in programming developed by TCG in partnership with field practitioners along three new tracks, the ABCs of PHX: Artistry in Action, Best Practices, and Capacity Building. We will embrace new connections with colleagues, we will break bread in community with one another, and we will forge relationships with Arizona’s multiplicity of cultural leaders and organizations. Together we will look toward our future while (re)discovering, reckoning with, and honoring our past.
A Note from the TCG Conference Team
March 23, 2020
We’ve received a lot of questions regarding the planning for this year’s TCG Conference, and we wanted to assure you that we are paying close attention to the progression of COVID-19 in the U.S. At this time, TCG is closely monitoring the situation and considering all possible options, though our Conference is set to occur beyond the current timeline the CDC has issued for the recommended cancellation of gatherings over 50 people.
We are preparing to make swift adjustments to the Conference form if needed. Rest assured, TCG will produce a gathering in June, though it’s possible it will look different than our usual annual gatherings, and it will certainly contain a robust virtual element. In this unprecedented era, coming together as a theatre community feels ever more urgent and necessary, and we thank you for your patience as we make decisions about what’s in store for this year’s convening. We will announce more about our definitive plans for the 2020 TCG National Conference in the coming weeks.
If you are currently registered for the Conference and would like to cancel your registration, please contact us at email@example.com.
In the meantime, please visit this TCG Circle community which is packed with informative resources and conversations about managing the impact of COVID-19. To join this community, please contact director of communications Corinna Schulenburg at firstname.lastname@example.org.
