PROGRAMMING, LOGISTICS, AND SERVICES

What is the Conference about?

We can meet on the common ground of the American theatre…We may disagree, we may forever be on opposite sides of aesthetics, but we can only share a value system that is inclusive of all Americans and recognizes their unique and valuable contributions. The ground together. We must develop the ground together.

-August Wilson, The Ground on Which I Stand

This year's conference will join with theatre-makers in Pittsburgh to host our first hybrid National Conference, embracing the duality of both in-person and virtual programming. Through fluid, action-oriented programming arcs on Redefining our Art, Transforming our Practices, and Tending to our People, we will take inspiration from our host city of Pittsburgh as we reflect on our shared yet imbalanced challenges, galvanize for our collective future, and develop new ground. Together.

Where do I find the Conference agenda and learn more about programming?

An Agenda-at-a-Glance will be posted in the coming weeks. Detailed session information and speakers will be announced as they are finalized, so please stay tuned! Please stay tuned, and check this page for future updates.

Where is the Conference taking place?

Home base for the In-Person portion of the 2022 National Conference will be the Westin Pittsburgh, located in downtown Pittsburgh, PA. Read more about the Westin and TCG’s exclusive room rate. Those joining us in-person can expect to explore the city of Pittsburgh through off-site programming, events, and tours. Please stay tuned for more information.

Attendees joining us virtually will be invited to a third-party event platform called Socio beginning in early June. Desktop and mobile app versions of Socio are available and free to download.

How can I make hotel arrangements?

The Conference Hotel page includes all the necessary information for our hotel partner this year. TCG's exclusive attendee rate at the Westin Pittsburgh is $185 (single or double occupancy), not including taxes. Please click here to book with the TCG rate online*. You can also book via phone (1-412-281-3700) by mentioning TCG. This discounted rate will only be available through Monday May 23rd, or until sold out.

What time of day will sessions take place?

Producing a hybrid national event means offering a range of start times for conference programming! The majority of in-person programming will take place between 9am-6pm ET, with optional breakfasts, lunches, and receptions taking place on certain days of the conference. The majority of virtual programming will take place between 11am-6pm ET.

Take me back to the top of this page.

Do I have to attend every day of the conference?

While we recommend that participants attend the entire Conference for the sake of continuity, we understand that this is not always possible. Unfortunately, however, we do not currently offer one-day or pro-rated registration rates. In some instances, conference programming will be recorded and made available after the fact.

Do TCG convenings have dress codes?

At our in-person events, wear what makes you feel comfortable. In June, the weather in Pittsburgh usually ranges from the high 60s to the mid 80s. Hotel temperatures can be hard to regulate, so we urge you to consider layers! (Feel free to step it up a notch for the Opening Night party on Thursday, June16th!)

In a virtual setting, we know attendees will likely be joining from their homes, so we similarly encourage you to do the same!

Take me back to the top of this page.

I’m registered to attend virtually. How do I access the programming?

All attendees will be invited to our third-party event platform, Socio, beginning in early June. Socio is how attendees (virtual and in-person) will access detailed information about the conference, view agendas, maps, and shared resources, interact with other attendees, and participate in virtual programming.

I’m joining in-person, but I want to make sure I have access to hybrid conference programming. Do I need to register twice?

No! All registered attendees will have access to hybrid conference programming, regardless of if you are joining us virtually or in-person. Additionally, all in-person attendees will have access to virtual only programming should they be interested in participating.

REGISTRATION AND FEES

I’m new to TCG Convenings and don’t know where to start. What should I do?

Welcome! We try to include as much support as possible to make your first-time experience a rewarding and stress-free one, starting with this FAQ page. Here are some things you should consider:

  1. Our About the Conference, Conference Outcomes, Conference Archives and Impact Report pages are great places to start familiarizing yourself with all that our conference offers.
  2. Registered attendees will also receive multiple emails leading up to the event with more information, and we always host an orientation for first-time and returning attendees before the conference begins.
  3. Most importantly, all attendees will be invited to our third-party event platform, Socio, beginning in early June. Socio is how attendees (virtual and in-person) will access detailed information about the conference, view agendas, maps, and shared resources, interact with other attendees, and participate in virtual programming.
  4. Finally, you may always email us at conference@tcg.org with further questions!

Who can attend the Conference?

All who exist within and are striving for a just and thriving theatre ecology are welcome to attend! More specifically, TCG Individual Members; Trustees and Staff of TCG Member Theatres; Staff of TCG University, Business, Not-for-Profit, Funder & International Affiliates are all welcome to attend at the Member rate. Non-Member theatres and Non-Member Individual Artists are all welcome to attend at the Non-Member rate. High school students may attend through "teen councils", generally organized through TCG Member Theatres. Find pricing and detailed registration information on this page. Questions about attendance can be emailed to conference@tcg.org.

What is the cost to attend the Conference?

The cost of registration for the 2022 National Conference for TCG Members is $400 at the Early Bird rate (available through April 15 or until sold out) and $550 at the Regular rate. For Non-Members, the rates are $650 (Early Bird) and $850 (Regular). In an effort to make the Conference experience more flexible for different budgets, our registration process will offer you the opportunity to opt into each available Conference meal at an additional charge. Please note that all coffee breaks will be included with your registration. More details can be found on the Rates, Info, & Register Now page.

Yes! Any individual or staff member at a member organization (includes TCG Member Theatres and Affiliates) qualifies for the TCG Member Rate.

Does TCG offer financial aid to attend the Conference?

Yes! We offer scholarships and subsidies through a short application process. Please read more about those opportunities on this page.

I’m a current TCG grant recipient – how do I register for the conference?

You may register online using the standard registration form, but please check with your TCG contact for requisite discount and comp codes before doing so.

I’d like to attend the Conference, but it’s not in my budget. Can I volunteer?

Information on eligibility criteria and the volunteer application process for the Conference can be found on the Volunteer page. If you meet the eligibility criteria and either live in the Pittsburgh area or are able to cover your own travel and lodging, please feel free to submit an application through that page.

I really want to participate, but can’t afford it. What can I do?

Please reach out to Devon Berkshire or Anne Ciarlone with your specific situation and they will advise you on your best registration option.

Why are you asking about my identity as part of registration?

Our registration process includes optional demographic questions, representing three areas of identity: gender identity, race & ethnicity, and disability; as well as additional questions regarding income level, age range, and veteran status. We include these questions in our TCG Convening registration forms in order to better understand who is represented at our events, even virtually, and to make it possible for us to more effectively practice inclusion and work toward equity. Because we know identity is more than a checkbox, in most cases we're providing open fields to give you freedom to identify as authentically as possible. Your information will be kept private, and used only by TCG as a means of improving our service to the field, including for the purposes of securing private and public funding. If you have questions, please email conference@tcg.org.

I can no longer attend the Conference. Can TCG refund my registration?

We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic has made planning especially difficult, and that in spite of best efforts, plans may change. Please know that your registration is flexible and fully refundable, however we ask that attendees make an effort to let us know if they need to cancel no later than Thursday, June 9th, whenever possible. Attendees who no-show without notice will not be eligible for any refunds. Attendees may switch their in-person registration to a virtual registration at any point without financial penalty; similarly, attendees are welcomed to switch their virtual registration to an in-person registration at any point prior to June 9th. If you are no longer able to attend the Conference, or would like to adjust your registration, please notify us at conference@tcg.org so we can make space for others.

HEALTH, SAFETY, AND ACCESSIBILITY

What COVID-19 safety measures are being taken?

Please review our COVID-19 Policies page for a running list of policies and safety measures we’re putting in place for this year’s conference. All policies are subject to changes and additions as TCG continues to monitor the impact of COVID-19 and its variants, both locally in Pittsburgh and nationally. We welcome your questions or feedback about these policies via email at conference@tcg.org.

Take me back to the top of this page.

What support does TCG offer to people with disabilities? Who can I contact regarding access?

TCG provides live captioning and ASL interpretation at as much of our conference programming as possible, and our Conference spaces are ADA accessible. We will announce which portions of the agenda have these resources available in advance of the conference, so please stay tuned.

When filling out your registration form, please indicate any additional access needs you may have. We will follow up with you about this information if need be, and work to support you as best as possible. If you have questions, please contact Anne Ciarlone. You may also find additional accessibility information on this page.

Take me back to the top of this page.

Will I be expected to be on camera the whole time I am attending virtual programming?

You will not be required to be on camera at any point, but we do encourage you to remain visible to the extent that you are comfortable. For many, being on camera helps build a sense of community and trust, makes conversations more engaging, and allows facilitators to “read the room” more so than when many cameras are off. At the same time, we know that it can be draining to be “camera ready” all day, so we encourage you to take breaks as needed.

Take me back to the top of this page.

Are there other basic TCG Zoom best practices I should note?

We encourage you to mute yourself when you’re not speaking, to cut down on background noise. Individual sessions or breakout rooms may offer their own requests for how to interact on Zoom during the session, and TCG may offer some further guidelines closer to the event.

I’d like to attend the conference, but I have a kid at home. Can I bring them?

Understandable! Know that TCG hosts a Family-Friendly Conference: parents and adults are permitted to bring one child, ages 11-17, to most in-person plenary sessions free of charge (some are closed due to content; check the session listing for information on closed content). The registered parent/adult must accompany their minor, and sign them in at the on-site Registration desk. This applies to in-person, plenary (full-Conference) sessions only. More information about TCG’s family-friendly Conference policies will be released in the coming weeks, mainly relevant to in-person attendees. (Virtual attendees are always welcome to have kids on screen!)
